Cassie Premo Steele
Dr. Steele has taught literature and women’s studies classes at USC and conducted writing and poetry workshops throughout the Columbia area. Her expertise in healing offers metaphors for psychic growth. She considers stories medicine, whether written or read, to be powerful resources.
Responding to the story is the work of our daily lives. Stories are embedded with instructions to guide us about the complexities of life, both the joy and the pain.
Dr. Steele’s first book Moon Days was a collaboration of authors working together on a woman’s series on menstruation stories. “We wanted to help our daughters, our mothers, and ourselves deal with everyday feminine issues without being afraid.”
Using writing as a way to heal has always fascinated Cassie Premo Steele-- editor of Moon Days, the author of We Heal from Memories , and her latest book Ruins.
“Healing is more than the absence of disease,” Dr. Steele reminded readers. “Awareness brings us back to our true nature, to pay attention to little things. I keep a continuous inner dialogue between nature and me. It’s a way of slowing down to live life fully.”

Paperback edited by Cassie Preemo Steele. 176 pp. Moon Days is a great collection of women's writings on menstruation.
Twenty-six writers explore the "silent" parts of women's lives; reawakening menstruation memories of embarrassment and shame and transforming them to wonder, excitement, and laughter.
"Although women experience 'the curse' from their early teenage years until their early fifties, most of us don't discuss it in depth . . . and certainly don't write or read short stories and poetry about the subject! Moon Days, by a collection of talented authors, is for women of any age and is inspired by the wonders, embarrassment, and power of menstruation. Surprisingly, it is a very funny and touching read. I am past menopause, and who would have guessed that Moon Days would actually make me nostalgic for that significant part of my younger years."
