Creating Altars

Mentor:  Jan Calloway-Baxter

Create sacred space with altars; you will create four altars with guidance and encouragement.

In the Creating Altars class, we come together to look at a bit of history about altars, to explore the many different kinds of altars out there, to discuss purpose, location, and symbolism important to altar builders.  We will bring all of this information together to build four altars each:  a seasonal altar, a single focus altar, an outside altar, and a portable altar.  Come join us to begin or to expand on your altar-consciousness.

INTRODUCTION: People have made altars for nobody-knows how long. Altars honor the dead, celebrate rites of passage, beautify personal space, pay tribute to the sacred. Building altars seems to be a deeply-rooted impulse. In this course, we will examine this impulse, honor it, build upon it. We will look a bit at the history of altars, look for the altars that exist all around us, speak of the purpose, location, and symbolism important to altar-making.

Then together we will build four altars, sharing photographs and descriptions, ideas and drawings.  We will build a seasonal altar, a single focus altar, an outside altar, and a portable altar. I will share many photographs of altars to inspire you. So, welcome. Come on in. Pull up a comfy seat and a cup of herbal infusion. Let’s explore altars together.

Lesson One: Part One – Altars, altars everywhere; Part Two—History;

Lesson Two: Part Three—Definition; Part Four—Purpose, Location;  Part Five—Symbolism;  Part Six—Altar One, Seasonal Altar;

Lesson Three: Part Seven—Altar Two, Single Focus or Single Deity Shrine;

Lesson Four: Part Eight—Altar Three, An Altar located outside;

Lesson Five:  Part Nine—Altar Four, A Portable Altar.

Course Goals:
1-Learn to recognize altars around you;
2-Consider the history of altars;
3-Develop your own definition of an altar;
4-Understand the symbolism of altar-making;
5-Make your own four altars with companionship and support of mentor and colleagues.
