Class description: Heal Your Heart contains information I hope will someday be taught to our children as a matter of course so they grow in the knowledge that healing takes place in the context of relationships – our relationship with each other, the earth and her seasons and with the heavens. Even our organ systems are in relationship with each other, which is eloquently illustrated through Chinese Five-Element Theory. Chinese Medicine is an empirical system of knowledge that has been in place for thousands of years. This is a class about learning how to become more present in our Heart-Mind, and how to eat and live well so that we have a healthy Heart.
Knowledge is power and empowered people make empowered choices. Nowhere can this be seen more clearly than in the choices that effect health and wellbeing. We have not really been taught how to take care of ourselves, or what it means to have a longevity plan. Our current system of health education, put in place by government and corporations, do not necessarily have our best interests at heart. Our current model of health care itself is steeped in the heroic and mechanistic model. The Wise Woman tradition on the other hand teaches us to trust our own inner guidance and intuition while informing ourselves on all levels. When we marry the best of our current models of medicine with the healing modalities of the ancients, a bigger picture emerges: one is which the whole person is seen in a light of a new understanding. This course will explore a holistic approach to taking care of both our physical heart and Heart-Mind as we explore the full potential of the Summer season.
Lesson #1: The Heart-Mind connection and its role in cardiovascular and mental health.
Description: We will look at the heart from an energetic perspective as the mental and emotional center of the body and begin to explore the correspondences of Summer. We will explore the concepts of shen, qi, yin and yang throughout all the lessons in this class.
Assignment: You will begin a dialog with your heart, journaling about your relationship to spirit, and identifying blocks that keep you from leading a more fulfilling life, and/or experiencing and expressing the emotions of happiness and joy.
Lesson #2: Physical, psychological and emotional symptoms generated by a heart imbalance.
Description: Heart disease is currently the largest health problem in the United States. We will examine how heart imbalance manifests in our lives and in our bodies, how it is in relationship to the other organ systems in health and disease, and how it affects our mental health.
Assignment: You will identify habits that diminish the qi of the heart, learn about the different ways that heart imbalance manifests, and learn strategies for harmonizing the Heart-Mind.
Lesson #3: Dietary and lifestyle recommendations and herbs that support and protect the heart.
Description: We will learn how to restore and maintain healthy heart function by eating with the seasons, moderating our lifestyle, and using herbs to support and nourish the heart and small intestine.
Assignment: Practice the “High Noon Attunement with Fire” meditation, make a heart healthy meal that incorporates foods, herbs and spices mentioned in this lesson, and participate in an art project that teaches how to create through vision and thought.
Lesson #4: The thermal nature of food and blood disorders.
Description: We will identify patterns that lead to imbalance and learn strategies for restoring balance.
Assignment: You will devise a longevity plan for yourself and make a contribution that would encourage someone in your family or community to take better care of their heart health.
